What is McKinney Vento? In one word, support.

The McKinney-Vento Act is a federal law that uses the school as a stabilizing force in a student’s life while the family is experiencing housing instability.

Housing insecurity can appear in many ways. Your family may be doubled up with another for economic reasons. You may be in a shelter, a camper, or a hotel. You may not have heat. There are a number of things that can qualify you as MKV for the duration of the school year.  If you qualify as MKV, it allows us to be able to use funds to help stabilize the student’s life.

All MKV students are entitled to

  • The right to an education.  This means being able to enroll even if you don’t have the proper paperwork.

  • Free breakfast and lunch at school, which is already happening district wide this year.

  • The ability to attend the same school through the entirety of the school year, even if you have to move to find adequate housing or support.

  • Help setting up busing transportation to and from school.
